Choosing the best irrigation system for an Auckland garden
An irrigation system isn't just about saving time. It's about keeping the right amount of water in the right zone of soil — and that depends on what you've planted.

Drip, spray, leaky hose and full automation — when each makes sense for a New Zealand garden, and what usually goes wrong.
Auckland's climate looks generous on paper — 1200mm of rain a year, warm summers, mild winters. In practice, it falls in the wrong months. We get long, dry stretches from December to March that can stress out a young garden in a fortnight, and we get wet enough winters that nothing wants to be on a sprinkler timer in July.
A well-designed irrigation system gets that nuance right. The wrong one wastes water, drowns plants, or quietly fails the moment you go on holiday.
Match the system to the planting
There are four practical options for Auckland gardens, and they're not interchangeable.
Drip lines for garden beds
Inline drip is what we specify for almost every ornamental and edible bed. Water is delivered slowly at the root zone, so almost nothing is lost to evaporation, the foliage stays dry (which means fewer fungal problems) and the system can run during the day if it has to. A typical residential bed needs 30–45 minutes twice a week through summer.
Drip is also the right choice for any planting going in this season. Young plants need consistent moisture for the first eight to twelve weeks, and drip is the only system that delivers that without you having to think about it.
Pop-up sprays for lawns
Lawns need overhead water — they're a single species at the same depth, and they evaporate uniformly. Pop-up rotor or fixed-spray heads on a single zone, scheduled to run early morning, is the standard answer. Set them to overlap by about 30% so you don't get the brown stripes that are almost always under-coverage.
Leaky hose / soaker hose
The cheapest option, useful for retrofit on a small bed where laying drip is overkill. The trade-off is that it gets clogged in our hard-water suburbs and the flow becomes uneven over time. Fine for a vegetable patch you'll replace seasonally; not what we'd specify for a long-term planting.
Full automation with a smart controller
On larger or more complex sites we run everything off a smart controller — Hunter, Rain Bird or similar — that can adjust based on weather data and soil moisture. The controller runs different zones for different plant types, skips watering after rain, and reports back if a valve fails or a line breaks.
Over a year, a smart controller usually pays for itself in water savings on a Pukekohe-sized lawn, and it removes the cognitive load of remembering when to switch the system on and off.
What usually goes wrong
We've inherited a lot of irrigation systems on maintenance jobs. The recurring problems:
- Drip lines installed under mulch with no flush valves — they silt up in two seasons
- One zone trying to water both lawn and beds — neither gets the right amount
- Pop-ups set to run for 4 minutes, which doesn't soak deep enough, so the lawn roots stay shallow and brown out faster in dry weeks
- Controllers set in summer and never updated — running through winter rain
- No backflow preventer on a system tied into mains drinking water
What we'd put in a Franklin garden
For a typical residential property in Pukekohe, Paerata or Karaka, we'll usually run a smart controller, a drip zone for each bed cluster, and a separate spray zone for the lawn. Plus a quick-coupler tap or two near productive areas for hand-watering when something needs extra attention.
The whole thing is buried, runs on a schedule that adjusts to the weather, and just works in the background — which is the test we apply to anything in a finished landscape.
